Especially in winter, we long for something green in our own four walls. So why not plant a herb garden in the kitchen? “Indoor Farming” is the urban trend towards self-sufficiency in herbs and vegetables.

If you do not want to give up fresh greenery in the kitchen even in the cold season, you have new possibilities with indoor farming. A whole range of manufacturers now offers clever solutions for the cultivation of herbs or vegetables in the living space. The solutions range from simple planter racks to complete vertical farming systems that use the latest technology to optimize green farming.

An example of these greening aids for the home is “Plantcube” – a greenhouse, which the Munich start-up Agrilution presented at the past kitchen event LivingKitchen in Cologne. Special LED lighting, sensors, automated irrigation and climate control ensure that the plants thrive in the high-tech furniture. Similar to a refrigerator, “Plantcube” blends seamlessly into the fitted kitchen, always keeping fresh green.

Also on the LivingKitchen the panel garden of the kitchen manufacturer next125 was presented. Hung in the moldings of the kitchen back wall, the shapely planters complement the equipment for cooking. The greened panels not only contribute to a homely atmosphere, but also provide fresh herbs every day. Depending on the location, there is an illuminated and unlit variant.

At the “Wall Farms” of the American company Click & Grow, the growth of plants is accelerated with a specially developed technology. The irrigation of the herbs in the plant shelf is done passively by capillary action from the integrated tank. The vertical gardening works in this way noiseless, so that the shelf can be placed anywhere. Four plant kits with selected seed capsules are intended to facilitate entry into indoor farming.

Experts see the cultivation of herbs and plants in your own four walls as a trend for the future. The current desire for cooking, the return to the classic kitchen or the increasingly vegetarian and vegan diet – these are all developments that make indoor farming attractive. The local harvest is also a sustainable way of producing food.
