A shady spot outdoors – who wouldn’t want that this summer? The latest trends in shading for outdoor areas offer clever, user-friendly solutions to rising temperatures and increasingly intense sunlight.

DIY pergola

Building a pergola helps combat the summer heat in the garden. It adds structure to the outdoor space and provides a shaded area for relaxing or dining together. The latest models are characterised by their exceptional adaptability. For example, the bioclimatic pergolas from the Belgian manufacturer Tramex feature adjustable aluminium slats that allow for individual control of sunlight. The Latvian company Upyard aims to make building a pergola as straightforward as possible. At spoga+gafa 2026, Upyard Link was unveiled – a modular construction system featuring combinable steel connectors. As a DIY project, it offers quick and straightforward assembly and a high degree of design freedom.

Large umbrellas, easy to use

Even with large parasols, handling has now been optimised to provide optimal shade at all times. The new ‘Hyperion 340’ cantilever parasol from Knirps, for example, offers reliable UV protection. Despite its large size, the parasol is incredibly easy to open and close. An integrated foot pedal allows the parasol to be rotated through 360°, whilst it can be swivelled to either side and tilted continuously. The new ‘Rhodos Twist Comfy’ cantilever parasol from Schneider Schirme also offers a similar level of flexibility. With its impressive dimensions of 300 x 300 cm, this patio parasol can be easily tilted and adjusted thanks to a practical turntable.

Shade for city balconies

The summer heat can be a particular challenge in densely built-up areas. In urban settings, sun and privacy screens designed specifically for small outdoor spaces – such as the ‘Wavio’ model presented by the Austrian exhibitor doppler at spoga+gafa 2026. Thanks to an innovative fan mechanism, it can be opened and closed by pulling up the canopy. This means that, even when closed, it takes up significantly less space than conventional balcony parasols. ‘Wavio’ can be swivelled and adjusted to different heights, allowing for optimal use even where space is limited. The new ‘3-Series’ from Helcosol is also designed for small balconies: the back of the parasol base is straight, allowing it to sit flush against the railing. The tube is not positioned exactly in the centre, so that the parasol can extend further out.

Design for contract business

In many cities, a vibrant culture of outdoor living has developed. Cafés and restaurants offer their guests inviting outdoor areas, whilst outdoor events attract large numbers of visitors. To protect them from the heat, the versatility of today’s parasols now extends to the commercial sector. One example is the new parasol model with which Kettler is expanding its award-winning ‘Latitude’ collection this year. Designed by French designer Frédéric Sofia specifically for use in commercial settings such as cafés and hotels, this robust aluminium parasol is easy to move and store. With its seamless aesthetic and three understated, on-trend colours, it blends seamlessly into many environments.

High-tech and retro style

As well as their attractive appearance, modern high-tech fabrics for parasols offer exceptional functional qualities. Their water- and dirt-repellent properties make them extremely easy to care for. With a high UV protection factor and excellent lightfastness, they protect against intense sunlight and retain their colour for a long time. The latter often comes in the muted, understated shades of the season or in on-trend colours such as ‘Matcha’ or ‘Cloud Dancer’, which also embody a timeless design. Subtly mottled textures are also in vogue, giving the parasols an interesting woven look. There are also parasols in bright colours or with eye-catching retro-style patterns – turning sun protection into a fashion statement.
